How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
William Kessler, Owner and President of US Uniform, was a professional handball player and is a two time Olympian. His first introduction to Indianapolis, Indiana was for the 1987 Pan American Games. When Kessler's first visit to Indy ended, he left with a team gold medal, most-valuable-player status and a passion for Indianapolis. In the following years he purchased two manual screen printing press and began direct-marketing to sports organizations, scouts, camps and churches. "We started screen-printing as fast as two manual presses could go", Kessler said. As his business thrived, his screen printing technology improved, he added state-of-the-art embroidery machines and ad specialty services. Before long, he landed a few accounts with Indiana Sheriff Departments. Always the savvy businessman, Kessler knew he could fill a void in the market. With all the in-house capabilities for badge and patch applications, alterations, and custom apparel, he knew he was onto something. in 2003, he opened U.S. Uniform and Supply, a retail store serving law enforcement and public safety professionals in Indiana and surrounding areas A strong focus on the leading brands in the industry, U.S.Uniform & Supply is dedicated to providing outstanding products, backed by excellent customer service. In addition, USU is the largest supplier of brown uniforms and cordovan brown basketweave duty gear, keeping with the traditions of county law enforcement. Today, he and the U.S. Uniform & Supply staff take great pride in the industry they serve and has become one of the leading suppliers in the Midwest.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Brown uniforms, duty gear, boots, outerwear and jackets can be hard to find. USU carries the largest selection in the Midwest. In-house alterations and embroidery services means officers can be outfitted and back to work same-day. This industry is notorious for long-waiting periods when customers need to order from the manufacturer. Because USU has a large inventory in-stock, law enforcement professionals often turn to them to get what they need when they need it. In addition, USU staffs only the most qualified and informed sales professionals. The sales team sincerely enjoys working with the customers and strive to create a safe space for law enforcement to shop and get outfitted.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
USU is comprised of three locations. One retails store, one warehouse and one embroidery and screen-printing facility. All within walking distance in downtown Indianapolis, IN.
